Loopwheel fleece is made on over 100-year-old knitting machines imported to Japan from Switzerland in the 1900s. The specific style of machine is called the ‘hanging machine’. As the name implies, the machines are suspended from beams that allow the fabric being produced to fall gently from the machine and collect in bins with little stretching. This allows the fabric to retain its rich texture while getting softer as it is washed and worn. Making this fabric takes great skill and time as the craftsman making these fabrics are, not only producing the textiles but are, constantly monitoring the machines which react to different temperatures and humidity. The speed at which these machines can produce fabric is 1 meter per hour compared to their modern counterparts which can produce knits at 24 meters per hour. Continuing to make textiles this way is a true testament to the quality of fabric these machines and craftsmen produce.
